Grown Brilliance remains one of our favorite places to shop when the setting matters as much as the stone. Its range goes beyond a basic solitaire, with interesting halos, side-stone designs, and more elaborate rings. You can choose a finished design, pair a loose diamond with a setting, or discuss a piece made from your own idea.
Ring design and fully custom work
The custom service is the biggest reason to put Grown Brilliance on your shortlist. You can send a picture or sketch and work through a proposed design rather than being limited to changing the metal and center stone on an existing setting.
Our confidence in its workmanship comes from jewelry we have bought, including an eternity ring and a heart-shaped necklace. The pieces were neatly finished, the presentation boxes were excellent, and a return was straightforward with a quick refund. That experience is why we continue to recommend it for jewelry, even though it does not win our loose-diamond price comparison.
What we like: the range of settings, attractive finish and packaging, and the option to develop a genuinely individual design.
What we would check: compare the center stone with Ritani, and ask for the grading report before ordering if it is not linked on the listing. With Clarity: best for trying ring styles at home
With Clarity is especially useful if you know you want an engagement ring but cannot picture how a particular setting will look on your hand. We tried its Home Preview service and later bought a real 1.11-carat round lab-grown diamond in a 14K yellow-gold Chevron Hidden Halo setting.
The finished ring was a highlight of our testing. Its prongs were neat, the hidden halo was even, and the polished gold had no rough areas visible to us. It arrived 11 days after we placed the order, including production and delivery. The blue presentation box also felt suitably special for an engagement ring.
What Home Preview lets you try
You can order up to two replica rings and compare the shape, setting height, proportions, and metal color at home. We found this much more helpful than looking at pictures alone. The replicas show the design, not the sparkle or quality of the real diamond.
Home Preview is no longer a free cash-refunded trial. Each replica costs $200. Return it within seven days and that payment becomes a With Clarity gift card. It makes most sense once With Clarity is a serious contender, rather than as a free way to compare every jeweler.

Ritani: best for getting more diamond for your budget
Ritani is our first stop for an affordable lab-grown diamond engagement ring. Its loose-diamond prices were the lowest by a wide margin in our latest comparison, and the search tools make it easy to compare stones without paying for grades you do not need.
Diamond choice and value
The large selection gives you room to choose the shape, proportions, and size you want. We particularly like the product-page cost breakdown, which separates the diamond cost, fulfillment costs, and markup. It makes the final price easier to understand.
We have also bought a lab-grown diamond ring from Ritani. It arrived quickly, looked good, and was securely packaged with its IGI report. The recommendation is not based only on a low number in a search result.
Its ring builder covers the familiar solitaire, halo, and side-stone styles. If you want something more individual, compare settings at Grown Brilliance, With Clarity, or Brilliant Earth before deciding. A cheap center diamond is not a bargain if you do not like the finished ring.
Ritani also offers an in-person preview with a Diamond Pro for orders of $1,500 or more. Its current page describes a temporary payment hold and a chance to inspect the actual diamond or ring before deciding. Check nearby availability and the timing before relying on it for a proposal date.

Blue Nile takes the place of the standalone James Allen store in this guide. James Allen has closed as a separate retailer, and its collection now sits within Blue Nile. You can browse those designs or use Blue Nile's own ring builder to choose a loose lab-grown diamond and setting.
Diamond inspection, ring building, and showrooms
We bought a 1.85-carat cushion-cut lab-grown diamond in a pavé engagement-ring setting from Blue Nile. The ring looked even better in person than it did online. Its proportions, finish, and craftsmanship exceeded our expectations, and it arrived with the grading paperwork and secure packaging.
The buying experience is a strong reason to consider Blue Nile. Good diamond imagery, detailed specifications, an easy ring builder, and showrooms help a first-time buyer work through the choices. It costs more than Ritani, but we understand paying a premium for a setting you prefer and a process that makes you comfortable with the purchase.

Brilliant Earth is worth considering when you have a particular style in mind or want to try settings in a showroom. Its range includes distinctive vintage-inspired, nature-inspired, and contemporary designs, alongside the familiar solitaires and halos.
Look beyond a general green promise
Its more specific lab-grown diamond collections are another reason to shop here. Renewable Energy, Capture, and Sustainably Rated options give buyers more information than a blanket claim that every lab diamond is environmentally friendly. Those attributes apply to selected stones, not the whole inventory. Check which collection and supporting information belong to the diamond you choose.
We also like its diamond search, inspection tools, and choice of in-person or virtual help. The drawback remains the price: Brilliant Earth was one of the more expensive sellers in our matched loose-diamond research.
What we like: distinctive settings, showroom help, and more specific choices for buyers who care about how the diamond was produced.
What we would check: the real stone's images and report, the complete price, and the return rules for custom or altered items. It is best for buyers who value those benefits over higher prices.

What you need to know before buying
Compare complete rings, not just center-stone prices
Set a budget for the diamond and the setting. Add any side stones, engraving, tax, and delivery charges before comparing two offers. A ring-builder page may show a setting-only price, while a finished-ring listing may already include its center stone.
Our September 2, 2026 research shows why this matters. For round lab-grown diamonds close to two carats, E color, VVS2 clarity, and IGI grading, Ritani's five lowest qualifying results had a $422 median. With Clarity's close-match sample was $1,063, Grown Brilliance's was $1,615, Blue Nile's five-stone median was $1,782, and Brilliant Earth's sample was $2,100. Use that gap as a reason to compare, not as a promise of today's price. A setting you love, better service, or a useful showroom visit can justify spending more. Paying extra for an indistinguishable center stone may not.
Choose a setting you can live with
Look at the ring from the side as well as above. How high does the diamond sit? Will the prongs catch on clothing? Can the wedding band sit beside it, or will you need a curved band? A replica or showroom appointment can answer questions that a beautiful product photograph cannot.
A solitaire keeps attention on the center stone and is usually simpler to maintain. Pavé and halo designs add small diamonds and more detail, but they also give you more small settings to check over time. Neither is automatically better. Choose for the wearer's taste and daily routine.
The 4Cs: useful starting points
The four Cs are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Our buying advice still holds: put a lively, well-cut diamond ahead of upgrades you cannot see. But compare current prices before automatically lowering color or clarity. High grades can be inexpensive in today's lab-grown market.
Cut: start with sparkle
Cut describes how the diamond's facets are arranged, not just whether its outline is round or oval. For a round stone, begin with a strong cut grade and inspect the actual video. A seller's Ideal label is a starting filter, not a guarantee that every diamond will look equally good.
Fancy shapes need their own comparison. Check symmetry, proportions, and distracting dark areas as the diamond turns. A pleasing oval or cushion cannot be chosen from a cut label alone.
Color: compare the actual stone
F–H is a useful starting range for a white-looking round diamond, but include D–E if prices are close. Larger stones and some fancy shapes can show tint more readily. Yellow gold can also change how you perceive the stone, so consider the whole ring rather than buying a color grade in isolation.
Clarity: pay for what you can see
An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions you can readily see without magnification. VS1–VS2 can be a sensible starting point, but inspect the stone rather than assuming every VS2 is eye-clean. If a good VVS2 costs little more, there is no reason to rule it out. Emerald and Asscher cuts deserve especially careful inspection because their broad facets can make inclusions easier to see.
Carat: compare size, not just weight
Carat measures weight. The measurements in millimeters tell you more about how much diamond you will see from above. Ovals, pears, and marquises can look larger than rounds of the same weight, though their proportions matter.

Check delivery, resizing, and returns before ordering
Work backward from the date you need the ring. Two-day shipping does not mean a made-to-order ring will arrive two days after payment. Ask for the production estimate and leave time to inspect it, deal with a sizing problem, or make a return.
Check when the return clock starts, whether resizing or engraving changes your rights, and whether a custom order gets a cash refund or store credit. Standard ring-builder purchases and fully bespoke designs are not always treated the same way. Keep the report, packaging, and order details until you know the ring is right.
Why choose a lab-grown diamond engagement ring?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. Their main attraction for an engagement ring is that you can usually buy a larger or better-looking stone for the same budget as a mined diamond. That can leave more money for the setting or simply let you spend less.
They avoid diamond mining, but the environmental impact still depends on how and where the stone was grown and processed. Look for specific information if that is important to you. Buy the ring because you want to wear it, not because you expect the diamond to hold its purchase price.
