Ritani is our highest-rated place to start for a loose lab-grown diamond, with a 4.7/5 score. Blue Nile follows at 4.6/5. Grown Brilliance, Brilliant Earth and With Clarity each score 4.5/5, with different strengths in jewelry design, showroom support and custom rings.

The best choice depends on what you want to buy. A low price for the center diamond matters most when value is your priority. For a particular ring design or a more guided buying experience, another jeweler may be worth paying more for.

What the ratings reflect

These are our editorial scores, not averages of customer star ratings. Our reviews consider diamond quality and selection, prices, shopping tools, service and the buying experience. They draw on the research, purchases, returns and inspections described in each review.

The same overall score does not make two jewelers interchangeable. Grown Brilliance stands out for finished designs and presentation. Brilliant Earth combines designs with showroom help and particular sustainability options. With Clarity's strength is choosing and customizing an engagement ring, including trying replica designs through Home Preview.

Ritani remains our favorite starting point for price comparisons. We were also impressed by the craftsmanship of the Blue Nile ring we bought. Compare the complete purchase, including the setting, rather than choosing solely from the highest score or the largest advertised discount.

What happened to James Allen?

James Allen is now part of Blue Nile's James Allen collection. It is not a separate current retailer in this list. Our James Allen review covers our experience with the business and explains the transition; the Blue Nile review is the place to assess today's buying option.

Why Clean Origin is no longer among our top five

Clean Origin was one of our strongest recommendations in earlier years. Our current score is 3.7/5: it still has a broad selection, and our tennis-bracelet purchase and return went well, but its recent prices, product presentation and service have not kept pace with our leading choices.

Our Clean Origin review explains both the strengths we still see and the reasons for the lower score. We would compare the five jewelers above before deciding.

A final check before ordering

Choose the design and total budget first. Then inspect the actual diamond or the finished jewelry's specifications, confirm the grading information and check the return terms for that order. A strong jeweler rating is a useful starting point; the right piece still has to suit the person who will wear it.
