Clean Origin was once one of our strongest recommendations for lab-grown diamonds, combining low prices, a wide selection and helpful advice. It still offers a substantial choice of diamonds and jewelry, and a support conversation can help narrow the options.

Our assessment is less positive now. We rate it 3.7/5, with prices and the shopping experience less compelling than our leading choices. In our September 2026 comparison, Ritani was cheaper, and the Clean Origin diamond page used a sample image rather than showing the actual stone. Ask for images or video of the diamond you are buying when a listing does not provide them.

Clean Origin now sells both mined and lab-grown diamonds. Its standard return period is 60 days, rather than the former 100 days, with exceptions for some custom, resized, exchanged and other orders. That window can still help with gift planning, but check that it covers the exact piece and leaves time after Christmas.

GemsNY: another option for a specific diamond or design

GemsNY offers a large diamond selection and competitive prices, which made it part of our earlier Christmas recommendations. Its New York diamond-district background and range can be useful if you are searching for a particular stone or design.

It is not one of our top five recommendations. Our 4.0/5 assessment recognizes the selection and pricing, while our GemsNY review explains the shopping and service concerns to weigh against them.

For a gift, pay attention to the return terms for the individual item or diamond, rather than assuming every purchase has the same conditions. If you are considering a New York visit, confirm the appointment and availability first. Ask for the actual diamond's report and clear media before committing online.

The sensible comparison is the same finished piece, with similar diamond quality, metal and return rights. A lower loose-diamond quote is not automatically a lower total jewelry price once the setting and other charges are included.

What to know before buying a diamond jewelry Christmas present

The four Cs—cut, clarity, color and carat—help explain diamond appearance and price. They are a starting point, not a substitute for seeing the stone and checking the finished design. A well-chosen smaller diamond can be a more attractive gift than a larger one with a poor cut.

Diamond cut

Cut has the greatest effect on sparkle. It describes how the facets and proportions handle light, rather than the outline of the diamond. With round diamonds, start with a strong cut grade, then compare the video and proportions. Labels such as Excellent and Ideal depend on the grading lab and retailer, so read the actual report rather than treating every label as equivalent.

Fancy shapes need a closer visual comparison because there is no single cut label that answers every appearance question. Look for attractive light return, a pleasing outline and no distracting dark areas. Do not lower the cut quality simply to reach a larger weight.

Diamond clarity

Clarity describes inclusions inside a diamond and blemishes on its surface. Many are too small to see without magnification. Paying for the highest clarity grade can add cost without making the jewelry look better.

The useful goal is a diamond that looks clean to the eye. VS2 through VVS1 often provides a straightforward starting range. SI1 or SI2 can offer value, but inspect the actual stone carefully: a visible inclusion near the center may matter more than several small ones near the edge. Step-cut diamonds, such as emerald cuts, can show inclusions more easily than brilliant cuts.

For earrings and small pendants, consider how the piece will be worn. You may not need the same clarity standard as a large ring viewed closely. Compare the appearance rather than choosing an automatic minimum for every gift.

Diamond color

For a white diamond, the color grade describes the amount of tint, not how much light it creates. D is the most colorless grade on the standard scale. Lower grades can still look white in a suitable size and setting, and can save money.

With today's lab-grown prices, compare E–H options before paying extra for the top grade. An I or J diamond can work in some designs; a warmer K can suit yellow gold if you like its appearance. Larger stones and some shapes show tint more readily, so view the diamond rather than assuming the metal will hide every difference.

For a pair of earrings, matching the two diamonds matters. Their color and visible size should look similar when worn together.

Diamond carat

Carat measures weight. One carat is 0.2 gram, and two diamonds of the same weight can have different visible sizes because of their shape and proportions.

Choose the cut and an attractive color/clarity combination first, then see what weight fits your budget. Compare dimensions in millimeters as well as the carat number. For earrings, bracelets and halos, total carat weight adds up all the diamonds, so it does not tell you the size of each stone.

1. Choose the kind of gift. Look at what the recipient wears: studs, a pendant, a bracelet or a ring. Match the metal to their preference and check sizes where needed.

Are lab-grown diamonds real?

Yes. Lab-grown and mined diamonds have the same diamond crystal structure, hardness and optical properties. Lab-grown diamonds are not cubic zirconia or glass. Their origin is identified by specialist testing and grading information, not simply by looking at the jewelry.

They also avoid the excavation and infrastructure of a diamond mine, along with its local pollution and community impacts. The environmental benefit is strongest when growers use renewable or lower-carbon electricity. Look for clear sourcing and metal information if those benefits are important to the gift.

How much do I save on a lab-grown diamond?

Should I buy lab-grown diamond jewelry for Christmas?

It is a good choice for someone who enjoys diamond jewelry and is happy with lab-grown diamonds. You can choose a larger stone for the same budget, a design they prefer or a lower bill. The recipient's taste matters more than choosing the largest possible diamond.

A surprise engagement ring deserves extra thought. Know their ring size and style, or make choosing the finished ring part of the present. For other gifts, a familiar metal and comfortable size often matter more than a small difference in diamond grade.
