A lab-grown diamond engagement ring is a lovely choice for a Valentine's Day proposal. You get a real diamond, a wide choice of settings and far more room in the budget than a comparable mined stone usually allows. The best ring is the one your partner will enjoy wearing, whether that means a simple solitaire or an intricate design.
Valentine's Day falls on February 14. For the next celebration in 2027, leave time to choose the diamond, make the ring and resolve any sizing questions. An order deadline is more useful than a general promise of fast shipping.
Lab-grown diamonds are made using technology that supplies the conditions for diamond crystal growth. They have the same essential chemical, physical and optical properties as mined diamonds. Their origin does not make them imitation stones, and they are suitable for everyday engagement rings.
Their lower price is a big part of the appeal. You can spend less, choose a larger diamond or put more of the budget into a setting your partner loves. There are also good reasons to prefer growing a stone to extracting one from the earth, especially when renewable energy powers production.
Start with a reputable jeweler and a grading report from a recognized lab, such as IGI or GIA, that identifies the stone as lab-grown. Check the report number with the issuing lab. A report helps you compare quality; it does not choose the best-looking stone for you. Check the diamond's video, proportions and complete ring price before paying.
Then think about the proposal. A grand gesture can be wonderful, but an intimate moment can be just as meaningful. Choose something that fits the two of you, rather than treating Valentine's Day as a reason to spend more than you can comfortably afford.
Should I buy a lab-grown diamond engagement ring?
We think lab-grown diamonds are an excellent choice when you want the appearance and durability of a diamond at a lower price. You do not need to buy a mined stone to make a proposal meaningful.
Savings of around 60–80% on the diamond are possible, depending on the seller and specifications. BriteCo's 2026 report listed average 2025 engagement-ring diamond prices of $2,057 per carat for lab-grown and $8,428 for mined, a difference of about 76%. That helps explain the value, though a complete ring also includes its setting and workmanship. Read BriteCo's price report.
Growing a diamond also avoids the excavation and local land disturbance involved in mining that stone. Renewable electricity can improve the environmental picture further. We would still ask about the producer's energy and sourcing claims: grown diamonds are not automatically impact-free, and metal and manufacturing choices matter too.
The practical decision is simple. Choose a ring because you like its look, quality and price, not because you expect the diamond to rise in value. Our engagement-ring buying guide explains the grades, setting choices and budget trade-offs in more detail.
Choose a setting that fits your partner
A classic solitaire keeps attention on the center diamond. A halo adds a border of smaller stones and can make the center look larger. A pavé band adds sparkle along the finger, while a more elaborate setting can bring in personal details or a favorite shape.
Look at the jewelry your partner already wears. Their preferred metal, the height of their rings and whether they like plain or detailed designs tell you more than a seasonal trend. Also check whether a wedding band will sit comfortably beside the setting.
If you want the proposal to be a surprise, make sure you can resize or return the ring. A fully custom piece may have different terms from a standard setting ordered in your chosen metal.
Where to buy a lab-grown diamond engagement ring
We favor jewelers that let you compare the diamond, understand the complete ring cost and get useful help with the setting. These are the main choices we would compare for a Valentine's proposal. The rating is our current overall jeweler assessment, not a score for every individual ring.

Grown Brilliance: distinctive engagement-ring designs
Grown Brilliance remains one of our favorite places to start when the setting matters as much as the diamond. You can choose from a range of classic and more elaborate designs, pair a stone with a setting or discuss an individual design through its Truly Custom service.
That custom option is the main attraction. It goes beyond simply choosing a metal and center diamond from a standard builder. Send a picture or sketch and discuss the design you would like to create.
Our confidence in its workmanship comes from jewelry we have bought, including an eternity ring and a heart-shaped necklace. We liked the finish and presentation, and a return was straightforward. We would still compare its center-stone price with Ritani before ordering a ring.
Check whether your order counts as a standard purchase or a special custom order. Grown Brilliance's eligible standard purchases have a 30-day return window from shipment; special orders, including Truly Custom, are returned for store credit only. Our Grown Brilliance review explains the selection, buying experience and terms.
With Clarity: trying styles before choosing the ring
With Clarity is particularly useful when you cannot picture how a shape or setting will look on the hand. Its Home Preview service lets you compare up to two replica rings. We tried the service before buying a 1.11-carat round lab-grown diamond in a yellow-gold Chevron Hidden Halo setting.
The replicas helped us judge the proportions, setting height and metal color. They represent the design, not the sparkle or quality of the diamond you will eventually buy. We also liked the finish of the real ring we received.
Home Preview costs $200 per replica. Return it within seven days and the payment becomes With Clarity gift credit, rather than a cash refund. It makes most sense when With Clarity is already a serious contender. Allow time for the preview as well as the finished order.
These examples show how a plain band, hidden halo and halo setting change the look of an engagement ring. Compare the complete ring price and the diamond details, not just the style name.
Compare a plain band with two pavé designs
The solitaire has a plain band. The other rings add small diamonds along the band, with either a hidden or visible halo. Look closely at where the small stones sit and ask how that exact design can be resized and repaired.

Blue Nile and the James Allen collection
James Allen was one of our favorite places for the online buying experience and help choosing a diamond. It is now part of Blue Nile as the James Allen collection, rather than a separate place to order.
The collection keeps a useful route to James Allen designs while you shop through Blue Nile. Compare the current diamond listing, setting choices and support available for the order you want to place. Former James Allen delivery and return promises do not set the terms for a new Blue Nile purchase.
We recommend Blue Nile as a strong all-round option, especially if you want to compare the James Allen collection with its wider selection. See our Blue Nile review for the current assessment.
Clean Origin: compare the value carefully
Clean Origin is still an option for lab-grown engagement rings, but we no longer put it among our first choices. Our earlier enthusiasm for its prices and service has softened as its value and the buying experience have changed.
We currently rate it 3.7/5. Compare the complete ring price and the diamond with our main recommendations, and check the current 60-day return terms and exclusions. Do not choose it on the assumption that it always has the lowest prices or the former 100-day return period. Our Clean Origin review explains the reasons for the lower assessment.
Ritani: diamond choice and value
Ritani is our first stop for getting more diamond for the budget. Its loose-diamond selection and competitive pricing make it useful when you want to choose the stone yourself and then pair it with a setting.
Its diamond videos and search filters help you compare the grades and appearance instead of paying extra for a label alone. Ask for help if you are unsure about a diamond's proportions or how it will suit a setting.
Compare the finished ring, not just the loose-stone price. Look at the metal, band width, setting height and available ring size. Our Ritani review explains why it remains our value favorite.
Brilliant Earth: designs, showrooms and sourcing options
Brilliant Earth is worth comparing if you want more setting choices or the chance to see designs in a showroom. It also offers sourcing and materials information that may help you choose a piece closer to your preferences.
We like the range and the opportunity to compare designs in person. It is usually a more expensive choice than Ritani, so decide whether those benefits are worth the higher complete price to you.
Check the claims for the particular diamond and setting you choose. A collection-level recycled-metal or renewable-energy claim should not be assumed to describe every item in the shop. Our Brilliant Earth review covers the design options, prices and buying experience.
Plan the proposal around the two of you
Once you have chosen a ring, confirm its production time, estimated arrival and resizing terms. Leave room for a delay rather than relying on February 14 delivery for a custom order.
Most importantly, choose a proposal your partner will enjoy. The ring's meaning comes from your relationship. A well-chosen lab-grown diamond can give you the design and quality you want while leaving more of the budget for the life you are planning together.
