If you liked a James Allen ring or pair of earrings, start with that collection. If you love Vrai's modern settings and distinctive jewelry, it remains worth comparing.
For a loose lab-grown diamond, the choice is now between Vrai and a current seller such as Blue Nile or Ritani. The former James Allen search, diamond videos and customer-service experience cannot be bought as a separate package anymore.

Introduction to James Allen
James Allen was founded in 2006 and became one of our favorite online jewelers. Its great strength was making a complicated diamond purchase easier: detailed videos, side-by-side comparisons, and help from non-commissioned gemologists.
We backed that view with a real purchase and exchange. The first pair of preset studs we bought did not sparkle as much as we hoped. We returned them and chose two 0.30-carat, D-color, VS1-clarity, IGI-graded diamonds for bezel studs. The replacement pair was much livelier, and James Allen handled the exchange in time for Christmas. Our James Allen review includes the photographs and full experience.
Blue Nile now sells the James Allen collection and supports earlier purchases. Its James Allen FAQ covers existing orders, account transfers, warranties and repairs. For a new purchase, judge the item and service as a Blue Nile order.
Introduction to Vrai
Vrai began as Vrai and Oro, with simple designs and a more direct approach to jewelry shopping. That design-first character is still the reason we would look at it. We particularly like its clean settings, interesting combinations of diamond shapes and less conventional earrings and necklaces.
Vrai is part of Diamond Foundry and focuses on its own lab-grown diamonds. Its connection to the grower is central to its brand, alongside designer collections and a showroom experience. We like the distinctive pieces, but Vrai is not one of our five main jeweler recommendations. The design needs to justify the price for you.
James Allen vs. Vrai: lab-grown diamond selection
The dated comparison showed why a huge catalog is not the same as a useful shortlist. A seller can have thousands of diamonds and still have few in the particular grades you want.
James Allen's diamond quality and inventory
Our dated search used a round brilliant lab-grown diamond with these specifications:
- Weight: 0.93–1.07 carats, close to one carat.
- Color: I or J, toward the warmer end of the near-colorless range.
- Clarity: VS1 or VS2, grades with small inclusions that usually need magnification to see.
- Cut: the highest qualifying label, generally Ideal for the IGI-graded stones we compared.
James Allen returned no lab-grown matches in that narrow one-carat search. Widening the color range produced 16 results when G was included and 82 when F was included. The article also recorded 29 matches in its larger-diamond search. Those results reflected the filters and stock at the time, not poor overall selection.
James Allen was particularly good at letting you choose the stone separately from the setting. Our earring exchange showed the benefit: more control over the exact diamonds. That does not mean all preset jewelry is inferior. For a finished piece, check the diamond details rather than assuming the brand name guarantees the sparkle you want.
Today, the James Allen collection at Blue Nile is a range of jewelry and settings. Do not confuse it with the former loose-diamond inventory.
Vrai diamond quality and inventory
Vrai returned 15 matches for our one-carat reference search. The smaller overall range did not prevent it from having more matches for that particular specification.
Design was the more important difference. We liked Vrai's variations on classics as well as its more unusual pieces. Its current earring range includes ear climbers, mixed-shape designs and several styles of hoops, alongside simple studs.
It is also too limiting to say, as we once did, that only engagement rings can be customized. The current Solitaire Stud page offers choices of shape, metal, carat weight and color, with single-earring and pair options. That is not necessarily the same as choosing two individually identified loose diamonds, so check what the configuration includes.
Grading is still a meaningful difference. Vrai describes an in-house grading process, not a standard independent IGI report with every diamond. Its published grading information also says it can arrange IGI grading for a non-refundable fee, allowing two to three weeks before production proceeds.
An in-house grade is not proof that a diamond is poor quality. We prefer independent grading because it adds a check separate from the seller. If you want that at Vrai, ask for the fee and timing before committing to the design.
James Allen vs. Vrai: price comparison
James Allen generally appealed more to us on value, while Vrai asked buyers to pay for its design and brand. the dated price examples help explain that view, but they were not a matched price survey.
James Allen diamond prices
The article recorded the following loose-diamond searches. These are historical prices, not current offers:

The weights differ, so the figures cannot establish which seller was cheaper for the same diamond. We have kept the numbers as research history without turning them into a savings claim.
The original finished-jewelry examples were a 2-carat total-weight James Allen tennis bracelet in 14K white gold at $1,800, and a 2.8-carat total-weight Vrai bracelet in 14K white gold at $3,500. Those were different pieces with different total weights, not interchangeable products. Total weight adds together every diamond in the bracelet; it is not the size of one stone.
For shopping now, use the current collection price. Old James Allen discounts and price ranges do not carry over automatically to Blue Nile.
Vrai diamond prices
Vrai makes the most sense when you want a particular design rather than simply the lowest cost per carat. A setting you love can be worth paying more for. The question is whether you still prefer the complete piece after comparing similar jewelry elsewhere.
For a loose stone, include any optional IGI grading fee in the comparison. Match the weight, shape, grades and report, then look at the actual diamond. A similar description on two websites is not enough to establish equal quality.

James Allen vs. Vrai: shopping experience
This was the clearest reason we preferred James Allen in the comparison. It made inspecting a diamond and asking useful questions feel straightforward.
James Allen's shopping experience
The former site combined detailed 360-degree views, accessible grading reports and side-by-side comparisons. Its non-commissioned gemologists could discuss the stones on your shortlist, rather than leaving you to interpret a long specification sheet alone.
We liked being able to look closely at several diamonds before speaking to someone. Videos did not replace seeing the jewelry in person, but they made it easier to rule out stones and ask specific questions. Our purchase and exchange reinforced the positive impression.
Those observations explain the historical five-star rating. For the present-day collection, our Blue Nile review is the relevant guide to the store you will actually use.
The Vrai shopping experience
We found Vrai's website clean and easy to follow, particularly for finished jewelry. Its restrained presentation suited the designs, without making every page feel like a promotion.
Our support interactions were friendly and helpful, though we preferred James Allen's depth of diamond-specific assistance.
When buying from Vrai now, ask to see the actual stone and its report. Clarify whether you are choosing an identified diamond or a piece supplied within a grade range. Its current stud listing, for example, gives a color range and a minimum clarity rather than the precise grades of a named stone.
If a showroom is convenient, trying the design on can be more useful than another hour of comparing photographs. The height of a setting, how a band sits beside it, and the feel of earrings are hard to judge online.
James Allen vs. Vrai: sustainability
Vrai has the clearer story about where its diamonds come from. We would give that some weight, while keeping the environmental claims separate from our own product testing.

Our research found little detail about the environmental footprint of James Allen's diamonds. Selling lab-grown stones alongside mined ones did not, by itself, tell us how much energy a stone used or where it was grown.
For a James Allen piece sold now, ask Blue Nile about that specific item. The old brand's marketing cannot answer those questions for the current collection.
Vrai sustainability
Vrai's mission page describes growing diamonds in its American foundry using river-powered energy. Knowing the grower and having a stated energy source are useful starting points for a buyer who cares about origin.
We no longer describe the finished jewelry as having no environmental impact. Growing, cutting, setting, packaging and shipping are different parts of making a piece. A claim about the foundry should not automatically be extended to all of them.
Our preference is to ask what evidence applies to the diamond and metal in the piece you want. Vrai's origin story may be a reason to choose it, but the design, grading and price still need to work for you.
James Allen vs. Vrai: shipping and returns
New James Allen collection orders use Blue Nile's current terms. Existing James Allen customers should contact Blue Nile for service rather than relying on an former James Allen return address.
Vrai's US shipping page currently lists $10 for FedEx 2Day and $50 for Overnight, plus applicable taxes. The product's estimated shipping date is separate from transit time, especially for made-to-order jewelry.
Its return policy allows eligible items below $15,000 to be returned within 30 days for store credit or a refund, less applicable recycling fees. Eligible items above $15,000 receive store credit. At exactly $15,000, ask Vrai to confirm the treatment before ordering.
The listed fees are $300 for an engagement ring, $50 for a wedding band or $50 for made-to-order jewelry; an engraved wedding band carries a $300 fee. Taking a non-refundable Vrai gift card instead waives the recycling fee. Resized rings, custom designs and certain Cut for You diamonds are excluded. Free US return shipping does not mean every return gets a full cash refund.
If you are unsure about a setting or ring size, settle those questions before ordering or resizing. The return conditions can matter more than a modest price difference.
