In this comparison

Start with Blue Nile if you want a diamond-and-setting purchase backed by the finished ring we received. Give Brilliance.com a look if you want a wider shortlist of individual stones and are willing to ask support for the report before ordering. We rate Blue Nile 4.6/5 and Brilliance.com 3.9/5 in our full reviews.

We bought a 1.85-carat cushion-cut lab-grown engagement ring from Blue Nile. At Brilliance.com we tested the search, checked diamond reports with support and built a ring basket. Those are different kinds of evidence, and the comparison makes clear where each applies.

Diamond selection and grading reports

Brilliance.com. Our November 2025 search recorded 53 loose lab-grown results with the filters we used around 0.90–1.10 carats, I–J color and VS1–VS2 clarity. That search also screened for listing images. It showed that we could build a shortlist within a tight brief. Search results and availability can change while you shop. Our Brilliance.com review

Two report buttons we tried during August 2026 research did not load the documents. Support sent the IGI reports for the individual stones we requested. Before paying, ask the seller to verify the report number and that the stone is still available. Save the report with your quote, especially if you are comparing two results with similar headline grades.

Blue Nile. We reviewed diamond information for the cushion-cut stone before we ordered, and the ring arrived with its grading paperwork. Blue Nile also offers a builder for pairing the diamond with a setting. Check that the setting accepts the stone's dimensions and ask to see how the combination will sit on the hand. Our Blue Nile review

For either seller, look beyond the report's first line. With a cushion, compare the outline, length-to-width ratio and how the facets look in motion. Two cushions of similar weight can have different face-up dimensions. If you are buying a round, look at the proportions and video as well as the seller's cut label. Compare the report's measurements with the listing and ask which media shows the exact stone.

Shopping experience and what we tested

Brilliance.com’s search and ring builder

Our Brilliance.com work covered the filters, specific report requests and a ring basket we built from a loose stone and a setting. We also reviewed how the site displayed preset jewelry details. That research helps us assess the path to checkout. Our evidence for delivery and finishing in this comparison comes from the Blue Nile purchase.

A preset pair asks different questions from a ring built around one diamond. If you are looking at preset studs, check the total carat weight, whether the stones are matched and what documentation comes with them. For a ring, ask which measurements determine whether the setting will fit your stone. If the report is missing, get it and check the number before placing the order.

The Blue Nile ring we bought

We chose a 1.85-carat cushion-cut lab-grown diamond in a pavé setting after reviewing the listing and contacting Blue Nile for help. The ring arrived securely packed with its grading paperwork. We liked how bright the cushion looked and how neatly the pavé band was finished. This was one order with a specific stone and setting. Our full Blue Nile purchase and review

If the proportions of the finished ring are a priority, ask for the center-stone dimensions, width of the band and an estimate of how high the setting will sit. Check which pieces can be seen at an appointment if you would benefit from a try-on. Bring the exact setting name and stone shape so the appointment answers questions about your shortlist. Comparing prices and the complete order

Compare the price of the finished ring in the same metal and style. Give each seller the same brief for shape, face-up size, color, clarity and grading lab. Then ask for the report and video of the actual stone. If the cut labels or proportions differ, decide which you prefer before weighing the price.

Quote itemWhat to record
Center diamondReport number, weight, dimensions, grades, lab and price
SettingStyle, metal, ring size and any side stones
CheckoutWhich items the promotion covers, tax, shipping and the total
TimingWhether the stone is available, production time and expected delivery
ChangesResize eligibility, return deadline, shipping and any exclusions

A discount on the setting can change the full order even if the center diamond costs the same. A promotion on a loose stone can disappear before you finish comparing. Save both totals on the same day and get the exact ring's service terms in writing. If a return would need to be insured at your expense, include that in your decision.

August 2026 researchWhat we recorded
Brilliance.com loose diamondOne 2.07 ct round at $1,321, or $924.70 with the public LAB30 offer at the time
Blue Nile loose diamondsMiddle price of $1,782 among the five lowest qualifying results. The five ranged from $1,756 to $2,028.

Both sets of round samples met E color, VVS2 clarity and IGI grading. The seller cut labels and the research filters were specific to each search. The individual stones differed in proportions and availability. One promotional example and a five-stone sample describe different things. Neither includes a setting.

In a separate Brilliance.com basket on August 30, 2026, an emerald-cut diamond at $1,204 and a $650 setting came to $1,691.50 before tax after a $162.50 setting discount, with free shipping in that basket. We recorded no corresponding Blue Nile basket for that emerald-cut ring. Brilliance.com review · Blue Nile review

Shipping, returns and resizing

We checked the published US terms on November 7, 2026. The return window and resizing service depend on what you order and whether you request changes.

Brilliance.com. An eligible standard return must reach the company within 30 days of shipment. Request a return code and follow its instructions for sending and insuring the item. Custom orders and setting-only purchases are among the exclusions. The published policy describes one eligible resize within 90 days of shipment, with shipping charges. The FAQ lists complimentary outbound shipping on qualifying US orders. Brilliance.com returns and resizing · Brilliance.com FAQ

Blue Nile. Its standard US policy gives eligible unworn items 30 days from shipment and up to two complimentary returns per customer per year. Custom, engraved or resized-after-purchase jewelry can be excluded. Blue Nile describes one complimentary resize for eligible rings within six months, within the design's sizing limits. Confirm those limits before engraving or changing the band. Blue Nile returns · Blue Nile warranty and resizing

Ask for a calendar date if the item has a long production lead time, an extended holiday deadline or a special-order condition. Before sending a return, confirm whether you need the original grading report and presentation materials and who provides the insured label.

Blue Nile

Our verdict

Blue Nile is our first choice here for buying a complete ring with the kind of buying and delivery experience we have tested. Brilliance.com is worth including when its search turns up a stone you like at a suitable price. Ask for the report and a written full-ring quote, then decide whether the stone, setting and after-sale terms suit you.
