In this comparison

Start with Ritani if the center diamond is the part you want to choose most carefully. Start with Grown Brilliance if you already have a finished style in mind, such as an eternity band or a distinctive pendant. Both can build an engagement ring around a lab-grown diamond. The better starting point depends on which part of the purchase you care about most.

We bought a round lab-grown engagement ring from Ritani and an eternity ring and heart necklace from Grown Brilliance. Each order taught us something different. Ritani made it easy to work from a particular stone and its grading report. Grown Brilliance made a stronger impression when we judged the jewelry as a finished design.

What our Ritani purchase tells us

We chose a 1.15-carat round lab-grown diamond through Ritani's ring builder in 2023. We considered a suggested alternative, paired it with a setting and received the complete ring with its IGI grading report. The diamond looked bright to us and the setting was neatly finished. The order arrived four days after we placed it, a useful result for that order rather than a delivery promise for another ring.

The report gave us something we could match to the diamond we had selected. The process also let us see which details changed when we switched from one candidate to another. That is useful if you know you want a round solitaire and would rather spend your time comparing the stones than redesigning the mount.

Ritani's loose-diamond catalog draws on wholesale suppliers. Its price breakdown shows the diamond cost and other components of the retailer's price. You still buy at retail, and a supplier listing needs to be available for your order. In our later review, a listing had confusing report labels, so we would open the document and match the number and measurements rather than rely on the heading. Ritani's inventory explanation and price breakdown explain the model.

What our Grown Brilliance purchases tell us

In 2024 we bought an eternity ring and a heart necklace. The ring let us judge how the repeated settings worked around the band. With the necklace, the shape and proportions of the pendant mattered more than any single stone grade. Both pieces were neatly finished, and we completed a return during our wider review. The pieces and the return tell us about the orders we actually tested.

Grown Brilliance also lets you build an engagement ring from a diamond and setting. The separate bespoke service makes more sense if you want to start from a sketch or adapt a design beyond the options in the builder. We reviewed the service and its published terms. Our ring and necklace purchases were evidence about finished pieces, rather than a test of a bespoke commission.

During our later loose-diamond research, the Grown Brilliance page we checked did not link directly to the grading report. If you are buying a meaningful center stone, ask to see the document before putting down money. For a band with many smaller diamonds, ask instead about the number and size of stones, how they are held in place and what happens if one needs replacing.

For an engagement ring, decide what you want to change

With a classic design in mind, start by shortlisting a few diamonds. Look at their measurements and videos alongside the reports, then check whether each stone fits the height, metal and setting you want. A larger stone can change how high the ring sits or how it fits next to a wedding band. Ask about the finished dimensions before choosing.

For a design that does most of the work, start with the ring itself. A substantial band, unusual halo or particular arrangement of accent stones may make the design worth choosing before the center diamond. Ask which parts you can change without moving from the standard builder to a special order. If you are commissioning a design, agree on the drawing, metal and final dimensions in writing.

A full eternity band deserves a fitting, because stones run all the way around the ring and can make resizing impractical. If you want a little room to adjust size later, try a partial eternity design as well. Check how each ring feels between the fingers and beside the bands you already wear.

Compare prices for the same kind of order

A wholesale-sourced loose diamond at Ritani and a finished Grown Brilliance ring are different purchases. The loose-stone listing excludes the mount, the work of making the ring and any design features in the finished piece. Even two loose diamonds with the same carat, color and clarity can differ in cut, visible inclusions and proportions.

For two build-your-own solitaires, compare both completed quotes on the same day. Keep the center shape and approximate size consistent, then check the actual reports and videos. Match the metal, setting style and accent stones. Add tax, shipping and any fees for work you expect to need. Compare the total actually payable and the amount you could get back if the ring was unsuitable.

For finished jewelry, start with the same kind of piece. Compare eternity bands with other eternity bands of similar width, metal and stone layout. Compare pendants with their chains included and check what the quoted total carat weight covers. A lower loose-stone price tells you very little about what one of those pieces should cost.

We use Ritani's loose-diamond search as a reference when pricing a center stone. Our purchase prices and earlier search examples came from separate orders and different products. We did not use them to calculate a saving on a matching ring for this comparison. Our lab-grown diamond price guides give additional context before you request quotes.

Returns, timing and resizing

We checked the published US terms on November 7, 2026. Ritani's returns page gives eligible orders 30 days from shipment and requires the prepaid label and original documents. Its service terms describe custom and engraved exclusions differently. Get the rule for your exact ring in writing, particularly if it is engraved or specially made. For a stone sourced through a supplier, confirm that it is available and ask when the completed ring will ship.

Grown Brilliance's return policy measures its standard 30 days from shipment. Standard eligible pieces can go back to the original payment method. Special orders, Truly Custom pieces and High Jewelry are generally store-credit returns under the published policy. Confirm the category before you approve a quote. Its resizing FAQ says eternity styles cannot be resized.

Keep any grading report and original packaging until you are sure you will keep the jewelry. If the fit is wrong, ask about an exchange before you have someone alter the piece.

Which jeweler would we choose?

For a classic lab-grown engagement ring with room to compare individual diamonds, we would begin with Ritani. Ask to see the exact report and price the setting before deciding whether the full order works.

For an eternity band, pendant or design you keep coming back to, we would begin with Grown Brilliance. If you like a bespoke design, go further only after you have the final quote and understand what happens if the finished piece does not fit or suit you.

Questions shoppers ask

Can I buy a completed ring from Ritani?

Yes. We used its builder for our round engagement ring. The diamond price is one part of that order. Confirm the setting price and the total when comparing it with a ring sold as a complete piece.

Does Grown Brilliance sell loose diamonds?

Yes. Its ring builder offers individual diamonds. Open the report for the specific stone or request it if you cannot find it, then make the same appearance and measurement checks you would make at Ritani.

Can the two retailers' grades be compared?

Start with the actual independent reports and the stones' appearance. Retailers' own cut labels and the headline weight of a multi-stone piece tell you different things from the exact measurements and grades of a center diamond.

How we compared Ritani and Grown Brilliance

We used our 2023 Ritani ring purchase and later listing checks, our 2024 Grown Brilliance purchases and return, the original purchase photographs and the merchants' published US policies. The reviews explain which products we handled and which features we researched. We did not order identical rings, test a bespoke commission or run a new matched checkout comparison for this article.
