James Allen began in 2006 and became one of the online jewelers we recommended most often. Its close-up diamond videos helped make choosing an individual stone less daunting, particularly for readers buying their first diamond.
Our own experience was positive, but not because the first order was perfect. We bought preset studs whose sparkle disappointed us in some lighting. We returned them and chose two matched 0.30-carat, D-color, VS1-clarity, IGI-graded diamonds for bezel studs instead. The replacement arrived in time for Christmas, and we preferred the result.

Introduction to Brilliant Earth
Brilliant Earth started in 2005 with an emphasis on sourcing and sustainability. We like its mix of classic engagement rings, less conventional settings and finished jewelry. It also offers both mined and lab-grown diamonds.
Physical appointments are a meaningful advantage if you want to try settings before ordering. In its August 2026 results, Brilliant Earth announced its 43rd US showroom, in San Antonio.
We rate Brilliant Earth 4.5/5. Its designs and shopping experience remain attractive, but the higher prices weigh against it.
James Allen vs. Brilliant Earth: lab-grown diamond selection
Our research used round lab-grown diamonds near one carat as a reference. The starting search was 0.93–1.07 carats, I–J color and VS1–VS2 clarity, with the highest qualifying cut labels. Color describes how colorless or warm a diamond looks; clarity describes its internal and surface features. Neither replaces looking at the actual stone.

James Allen diamond quality and inventory
The former James Allen catalog contained nearly 550,000 diamonds overall, including about 12,000 lab-grown stones. Widening the color search made a considerable difference: we found 16 results after including G color and 82 after including F color. An expanded two-carat search returned 29.
Those were different searches, not 16 diamonds all meeting the I–J filter. The practical lesson was to stay flexible on grades when it produced a better shortlist, without compromising the cut.
We liked being able to inspect a stone before choosing the setting. The catalog size alone was not the selling point. A smaller selection of diamonds with useful videos and reports could be easier to shop than thousands of poorly documented listings.
Brilliant Earth diamond quality and inventory
Brilliant Earth had around 267,000 lab-grown diamonds in our search, with more than 60 matches for our reference criteria. It offered ample choice without needing to widen the color range as much.
Its settings were another strength. When comparing the two sites, we found plenty of scope to choose a diamond first and then build a ring around it. For shopping now, shortlist the setting as well as the stone: the final ring can cost quite a bit more than the loose diamond alone.

Our near-one-carat James Allen examples cost $1,030–$1,250. The expanded searches included different color grades, so that range is not a perfectly matched comparison with every Brilliant Earth result.
We also recorded a $1,852 four-prong diamond bracelet in 14-karat white gold, with 2 carats total weight. Total weight adds all the bracelet's stones together; it is not the size of a single diamond. We liked James Allen's combination of price and shopping tools.
Brilliant Earth diamond prices
Our Brilliant Earth reference stones cost $1,100–$1,890. The ranges overlapped, but James Allen had the lower starting price in that comparison.
Brilliant Earth's higher prices deserve a closer look. In our August 2026 research, a 2.00-carat, E-color, VVS2, IGI-graded Brilliant Earth round diamond was $2,100. Among five closely sized 1.95-carat Ritani results with the same color, clarity and grading lab, the typical price was $422. The stones and seller cut labels differed, but the gap was large.

James Allen's shopping experience
James Allen's diamond videos, grading information and support were central to our recommendation. We could inspect a diamond closely, ask questions and choose the individual stones for jewelry.
Our earring exchange also mattered. James Allen supplied a prepaid insured return label, processed the exchange within a week and got the replacement to us during the Christmas rush. That experience is more useful to us than a list of website features.

The Brilliant Earth shopping experience
We found Brilliant Earth's website easy to navigate, with useful diamond images, video and report links. Some reports needed zooming in our research. Take the time to read them, especially if two stones look similar but have very different prices.
We also liked the build-your-own options beyond engagement rings, including pendants and earrings. Choosing the diamond and setting separately gave us more control over the finished piece. Email, chat and virtual appointments offered ways to discuss a shortlist with the support team.
Showrooms help with a different question: how does a setting feel on your hand? A close-up video cannot tell you whether the band feels too delicate or a raised setting will bother you during everyday wear.
Shopping experience summary
The former James Allen site was particularly good for choosing and inspecting diamonds online. Brilliant Earth combines that kind of research with a larger physical showroom presence.

James Allen vs. Brilliant Earth: sustainability
James Allen sustainability
James Allen gave buyers a lab-grown option that avoided newly mined diamonds. The impact of growing and finishing still depended on its suppliers and energy sources.
For a James Allen collection piece now, ask Blue Nile about that product's materials and sourcing rather than relying on the former store's marketing.
Brilliant Earth sustainability
Brilliant Earth gives buyers more specific sourcing choices. Its 2025 mission report describes the Renewable Collection as grown, cut and polished using renewable wind and solar energy. The Sustainably Rated Collection uses offsets for energy and emissions. These are different approaches, so choose the collection that fits your priorities.
The setting and packaging matter too. Brilliant Earth reports that 99.5% of its gold and 96.4% of its silver are repurposed, with exceptions for some chains and components. It uses FSC-certified wood from responsibly managed forests for its ring boxes and FSC Recycled paper for most paper packaging. We value these concrete choices alongside the diamond's sourcing information.
James Allen vs. Brilliant Earth: shipping and returns
James Allen's former return policy is no longer the policy for a new order. Blue Nile's current terms govern purchases through its collection.
Brilliant Earth allows eligible returns within 30 days of availability for shipment or pickup. Custom, altered and personalized items have restrictions. Check its return policy before ordering, particularly if you plan to engrave or resize the ring.
