In this comparison
We would start with Brilliant Earth if you want to choose the center diamond and build the ring around it. Zales is worth visiting if you have found a finished ring you like and want to see how it fits before buying. Both have stores and sell lab-grown diamonds. The difference is how much control you want over the exact stone and how useful the local store will be to you.
Our Brilliant Earth research includes an earlier purchase and return, showroom try-ons and later checks of its online diamond tools. At Zales we researched the catalog, ring specifications and the ways shoppers can inspect or customize an order. We did not buy a Zales ring for this comparison.

Brilliant Earth vs. Zales at a glance
| What matters to you | Brilliant Earth | Zales |
|---|---|---|
| Our editorial review rating | 4.5/5 | 2.4/5 |
| Best place to start | A ring built around an individual diamond | A finished design you can try at a participating store |
| Center diamond | Choose a specific stone and check its report | Ask whether you are choosing an exact stone or buying within listed specifications |
| What we found in our research | Useful video and measurements on a sampled listing, plus some sample images elsewhere | Product specifications varied, and generic images limited inspection |
| Grading paperwork | Look for the full report on the selected listing | Some pieces advertise a certification card; ask which lab and document you get |
| Useful store visit | Try settings and compare band profiles | Inspect a complete ring, check fit and ask about local aftercare |
| Fair price check | Add the selected diamond and setting | Use the finished-ring total and check its center weight, metal and terms |
The ratings are from our Brilliant Earth review and Zales review. The gap reflects differences in the shopping process and value we found, rather than a judgment about every ring in either catalog.
Why we would start at Brilliant Earth
If you want an oval with a particular outline or a round diamond with proportions you can check, it is useful to see the candidate before you choose a setting. In our 2026 Brilliant Earth research, one two-carat listing provided interactive video, measurements and an IGI grading section. Some other results used a sample image. Open the exact candidate and check what is available before relying on the website to make the decision.
At the showroom, we found it useful to see how much the setting changes the look of a ring. Two designs with similar pictures can sit at different heights or feel different between your fingers. Try a setting with the band you expect to wear alongside it, and ask whether the exact diamond you selected online will be available to see.

Brilliant Earth suits a shopper who wants both kinds of evidence. The showroom can help narrow the design. The individual listing can help you choose the center stone. If the report or actual video is missing, ask for it before ordering.
When a Zales ring makes sense
A finished ring can be a good way to shop when you know the style you want. You can look down at the actual ring, see how it catches the light and decide whether the band feels right. A nearby store is also useful if you need help with sizing or want somewhere to ask about repairs. Confirm that the store carries the exact item. Some designs are sold online only.
In our earlier Zales research, some listings gave a grade range or a generic picture when we wanted to inspect the stone we might receive. More detailed products are available. A Zales one-carat solitaire listing, for example, specifies a one-carat round center, 14K gold, F color and VS2 clarity and says a certification card is included. It is listed as an online exclusive. That makes it useful as an example of the information to look for, rather than an item we would expect to try at a local store.
Zales also offers customization options. Ask what is customizable before you decide. Changing the ring size or choosing a metal is a different choice from selecting an individual center diamond. Get the description and the return terms for the version you order.
What to ask about the exact diamond
Start by separating center weight from total weight. A ring advertised at two carats total may include small diamonds around the center or along the band. If you care about how large the center looks, ask for its own weight and dimensions. For a round diamond, use the report and appearance to assess cut. For an oval or cushion, look at the actual outline and watch the stone turn if you can.
On a Brilliant Earth build, open the report and check that it belongs to the stone you have shortlisted. At Zales, ask to see the report or certification card before buying, and ask who issued it. A product page saying a card is included is useful, but it leaves those questions open. Smaller accent stones generally will not each come with a report.
If you are in a store, look at the finished ring from the side and away from the strongest lights if possible. A slightly different setting height or band width can change whether you will want to wear it. Make sure the paperwork relates to the ring you will take home.
Compare two rings you would actually buy
Compare the Brilliant Earth diamond and setting together with the finished Zales ring. The loose diamond and the completed ring do different jobs in the price comparison. Add the setting before drawing any conclusions. A Zales sale percentage is less useful than the price you will pay for the exact metal, size and ring you want.
Here is how we would line up two quotes for a round solitaire:
- Check that both quotes describe a round center of similar weight and dimensions. Compare the actual reports and note any minimum grade ranges.
- Match the gold purity and the setting style as closely as you can. Note differences in band width, accents and whether the ring needs sizing.
- Ask what is included in the total. Add tax, any delivery charge and service you expect to pay for. Write down the date, the return deadline and any work that would change your refund eligibility.
If one design appeals to you more or the local store can handle an issue you care about, that can justify a difference in price. We did not price the same completed ring at both retailers. Our earlier value findings help us decide where to start, without giving us a reliable savings figure today. Our lab-grown diamond price guides can help you set a budget before getting quotes.
Returns, exchanges and fitting
We checked the published US terms on November 7, 2026. Brilliant Earth's policy generally gives eligible orders 30 days from when the purchase is first available for shipment or pickup. The rules for custom, personalized or altered pieces differ. The jeweler also advertises one complimentary resize for eligible rings, subject to the design, size range and timing.
Zales' help center lists 30 days for eligible jewelry returns and 60 days for exchanges from purchase or shipment, with exchanges handled in stores. Its custom-design exclusion matters if you order a variation. Check whether the piece you want can be resized, whether the work would affect your refund and whether any care plan is included or costs extra.
If you need the ring by a certain date, confirm both when it will be ready and when any sizing work can be finished. Save the terms for the order and keep the original documents and packaging until you decide.
Which jeweler would we choose?
For an engagement ring built around a diamond we want to inspect, we would choose Brilliant Earth first. Its individual-stone tools and setting choice make it easier to narrow both decisions. A showroom can help if you are still unsure about the setting.
We would choose Zales for a particular ring we liked after trying it on, provided the store could give us the information and terms we needed. If neither design stands out, get another quote before paying extra for a familiar name or an advertised discount.
Questions shoppers ask
Does Zales sell real lab-grown diamonds?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. Both retailers also sell other stones, so read the description and confirm that the center and any accents are described as lab-grown diamonds if that is what you want.
Can I get an independent grading report at both jewelers?
Brilliant Earth offers reports for individual center stones. Some Zales rings advertise certification; the details depend on the piece. Ask for the lab name and full report for your exact center diamond before treating the paperwork as equivalent.
Can I return an online Zales order to a store?
Zales' help center describes store and mail options for eligible online returns and says exchanges are handled in stores. Check your order's eligibility and bring the packaging, documents and purchase details requested by the store.
How we compared Brilliant Earth and Zales
We drew on our Brilliant Earth purchase-and-return research, original showroom photos and later diamond-page checks. For Zales, we used our catalog and inspection research, an example product listing and published store and order terms. We did not buy a Zales ring or run a new matched checkout test. The showroom images show Brilliant Earth only. See our editorial review process.
