In this comparison
We would start at Brilliant Earth for an engagement ring when you want to compare the actual center diamonds online. We would consider Helzberg if a local store can show you the finished ring or the exact stones you are choosing between. An appointment can be more useful than another product page, provided the store can show you what matters to your decision.
Our Brilliant Earth review includes a purchase and return, showroom try-ons and later listing checks. Our Helzberg review covers its online ring builder, preset jewelry and a support conversation. Helzberg also advertises in-store diamond viewing at selected locations. We treat that as a shopping option to confirm, rather than an in-store test we performed.

Our Brilliant Earth review and Helzberg Diamonds review explain the scores. They reflect each retailer's wider lab-grown offering and the evidence we had when reviewing it.
What we found at Brilliant Earth
We like to compare a few specific diamonds before deciding where to spend. One of the 2026 Brilliant Earth listings we checked made that possible with an interactive video, measurements, a size view and grading information. A few alternative listings used sample imagery. We would start with the exact report and an actual video before paying for a particular stone.
A showroom can answer a different set of questions. Try the height and band width you think you want. Turn the ring sideways and see how the setting would sit beside a wedding band. Ask whether the piece you are trying has the same proportions as the ring you would order. Our earlier purchase and return tell us about that order. The showroom photographs show what we were able to try at the time.
If the website gives you the stone evidence you need and the showroom gives you the fit information you want, Brilliant Earth covers both parts well. Ask the showroom whether you can see the exact diamond if that is the reason for going.
What we found at Helzberg
In the Helzberg builder we tried, an information control opened measurements, grading details and a report link for the selected stone. That was useful. We still wanted a photo or video of the actual diamond, especially for a larger center stone where appearance can vary even among similar grades.
Preset jewelry gave us a different experience. For the studs we researched, the listed color and clarity helped narrow the choices, but a description of the diamonds as round gave us the shape rather than an answer about cut quality. Support supplied other grades and said the certificate would come with the piece. It did not answer the specific cut question we asked. That gap told us less about the diamonds themselves than about what we could learn before paying.
Some current listings are clearer. For example, Helzberg names GCAL on a one-carat round lab-grown solitaire in 14K yellow gold. Ask to see the report tied to the exact diamond and whether that ring or an equivalent example is at your local store. The presence of a grading lab on one listing does not establish what comes with the rest of the collection.
Is Helzberg's Diamond Room worth a visit?
It can be, if the store can show you relevant diamonds. One Helzberg location that advertises a Diamond Room describes a session with a specialist and use of an Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool, or ASET. The tool uses colored areas to help you see where a diamond gathers light from different angles. It can help with an informed comparison, particularly of round stones, if the person showing you the diamonds explains what you are seeing.
Call before you go. Ask whether the store has the Diamond Room, whether it can show you lab-grown diamonds in the size and budget you want, and whether you will see the actual diamonds or samples. If the store can put two actual stones next to each other and show you their reports, that is a useful reason to visit.
Look at both stones under ordinary light, too. A report and a viewing tool can help you understand what you see. Neither decides which diamond you prefer on your hand. If you mainly want to compare the fit of two settings, tell the store that first and save time.
Make the price comparison on the finished ring
Compare a finished Helzberg solitaire with a complete Brilliant Earth build. A finished ring includes the metal and setting work. A loose-stone listing leaves those decisions and costs open. Even where both quotes show roughly one carat, check whether that is center weight or total diamond weight.
Use the same shape, approximate dimensions and comparable reports. Check the setting metal and whether the ring has accents. Get a written total that includes tax, delivery and any fitting or aftercare you expect to pay for. Ask which services are included and which require a separate care plan. Get the return rule alongside the price, especially if the ring is being made to order.
Our 2024 Helzberg search was a loose-diamond exercise. It helped explain our view of the listings available then. It does not tell you what a comparable ring costs now, or what you get for a particular store's quote. We would use it as a reason to get a second quote, with the same shopping brief and on the same day. See our lab-grown diamond price guides for a starting budget.
Returns, fitting and local aftercare
We checked the published US terms on November 7, 2026. Brilliant Earth's policy generally gives eligible items 30 days from when the item is first available for shipment or pickup. Its complimentary resize terms depend on the design, time and required size change. Custom or altered items can have different rules.
Helzberg's help center generally allows eligible returns or exchanges within 30 days of purchase. It requires unworn, new condition, proof of purchase and any physical reports supplied. Customized and engraved items are listed as final sale. Outlet purchases have separate store rules. Ask where your order can be returned and what happens if you need a fit adjustment first.
A nearby location can be a good reason to choose a jeweler if it can do the work you expect. Ask the store what is covered, whether inspection is required and how long a resize or repair normally takes there. Compare that answer with the cost of the ring, then wait to alter or engrave it until you are sure you will keep it.
Which jeweler would we choose?
We would choose Brilliant Earth first for a ring built around a center diamond we want to shortlist from home. Its stronger online inspection in our research makes a difference when the diamond is the hardest part of the choice.
We would consider Helzberg if the local store can show a finished ring we want or let us compare specific diamonds with their paperwork. The deciding factor would be the ring and terms we could confirm. If the store cannot show us the exact diamond, we would keep the other quote open.
Questions shoppers ask
Does Helzberg offer independently graded lab-grown diamonds?
Yes, on selected pieces. Some finished solitaires identify GCAL. In the builder we tested, some individual stones had IGI reports. Check what comes with your exact piece and ask to see the report before paying if it matters to the purchase.
Can I build a lab-grown diamond ring at either retailer?
Yes. Both offer ways to pair a center diamond with a setting. Some customization tools only change features such as metal or gemstone type. Confirm whether the option you are using lets you choose the specific diamond.
Is Diamond Room viewing available at every Helzberg?
Check with the store you plan to visit. Ask whether it can offer ASET viewing, which lab-grown stones it can show you and whether you need an appointment. We did not test that service for this article.
How we compared Brilliant Earth and Helzberg
We used the existing reviews, original Brilliant Earth showroom photography, our online Helzberg builder and support research, and published US product, location and policy pages. We did not purchase the two retailers' rings side by side, test a Helzberg Diamond Room or collect a new matched price sample. The photographs on this page show our Brilliant Earth visit.
